Hey guys, Today i'll be telling you about what we did Yesterday for reading. We read a Level 3 School Journal June 2012. In this Journal was a Article called Mmm, That's Tasty! By Neville Gardner, Page 25. It tells you about your tongue.
The things that help you taste are things called papillae. Inside each of these papillae's are groups of tiny taste buds. You have about 10 000 taste buds in your papillae. There are about a hundred cells called receptors, they taste the food and send messages to the brain. There are about 5 receptors that they taste and send to the brain which is: Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter and umami (Savoury). The brains job is to judge whether they like it or not and if you want to keep eating your food.
Are you a Picky eater? The receptors work very hard! When we grow and get older, the receptors start to change taste. If you smoke, your taste buds will start to die. It will also die when you drink hot tea, hot Milo or hot drinks. Children are very picky eaters because they have more taste buds than adults. Saliva does a very important job. When you eat chips or chicken and you didn't have any saliva inside your mouth, the food would be hard to taste. Taste and Smell work together to help you find out the taste. On a cold and winter day, you might get your nose blocked, this stops you from tasting food and the flavour starts to taste a bit different.
We also did a experiment with Jelly beans, this was to help us understand how taste and smell work together. It's called "The great jelly bean challenge". You have to find some jelly beans, put on a blind fold or cover your eyes. Get a peg or block your nose with your hands and get a buddy. The buddy will put a jelly bean in your mouth while you cover your eyes and block your nose. You then have to try and guess what flavour the jelly bean is. When you cover your nose, it's harder to taste the food or jelly bean! Here is some pictures we did in our class:
I hope you enjoyed this reflection I made! Hope you learned something from it and try out the challenge! See you guys Next time! Bye!
